The Flight Home

Looking back now, it’s easy to see why one flight home changed so much. At the time, I wasn’t thinking about a blog, developing a journal, or creating anything for anyone else. I simply knew there were things I wanted to change — and that I needed to find a different way of getting there.

After a few great days in Miami, I boarded the flight home with one of those thoughts that starts small but refuses to leave you alone.

Could I work toward the things I wanted to change without making my enjoyment of life wait until I got there?

I didn’t have the answer. When I got home, I started writing. Writing gave me somewhere to put the questions. It helped me reflect on what was working, notice what wasn’t, and think about what I could choose to do differently. Not everything at once. Not perfectly. And certainly not because keeping a journal could magically solve anything.

But gradually, I began to see possibilities I hadn’t seen before.

As I continued, I began thinking differently about journaling itself. I had used journals before, but often found myself wanting something slightly different — enough guidance to help me begin, but enough freedom to let the reflection go where I needed it to go.

That became the spark for developing my own approach.

Not a perfect journal. Not something that promises to have the answers. Just a thoughtful place to pause, reflect, notice what might need attention, and consider what comes next.

Reflect. Notice. Choose.

From those ideas, Beach to Desert™ began to take shape — first through the journal I started developing, and then through reflections and other ideas built around the same simple belief: we can work toward change without putting the enjoyment of the life we already have on hold.

The journal came first. Then the reflections. Then the stories. And eventually, those stories found a home called Kim’s Café.

All from a thought on a flight home.

Sometimes a different question is enough to change the direction we take.
